The beautiful Taiping Lake Garden is the “heart” of Taiping.
Once a tin mine, the Taiping Lake Garden is one of the oldest parks in the country. Set up in 1880 to beautify the former mining area, it is a scenic place with lots of flowers, trees and shrubs which in turn form a nice habitat for a variety of birds and insects.
Stretching over 64 hectares of exuberant green turf, trees and plants portray the good sense of environmental rehabilitation and preservation. The Taiping Lake Garden has a recreational park, Japanese garden, a zigzagging bridge that leads to a rotunda on the water, a pagoda bridge, rollerskating rink, lotus pool, paddleboat rides, and beautiful raintrees whose branches stretch across the driveway and dip into the lake’s waters.
To escape from the rush of city life, take a stroll or jog around the lake in this beautiful setting at any time of the day. There is a recreational path that has signage describing various exercises you can do.
The Rain Trees
Of particular interest to most photographers is the huge rain trees that grow by the lake. You will notice the branches that stretch across the road and dipping into the waters of the lake. It is as though the branches are quenching their thirst by taking in the water from the lake. The pictures of these rain trees can be seen in magazines and calendars. Sometimes, couples who are getting married can be seen posing here in their wedding clothes for a shot to remember the most important event of their life.
Taiping Zoo / Golf Course
The famous Taiping Zoo is close by, and on the way there you will find manmade rock formations built to look like dragons.
The oldest golf course in Malaysia within the vicinity was closed in the year 1995 due to the hazard it posed to the users at the lake garden. The course has since been converted to parks where trees, flowers and playgrounds have replaced the common sight of a golf course.
